Legends Supporting Charities
Over the years, the generosity of support businesses and Legend Owners have made a difference to others.
In 2005, Legend Owners started to include the support to Charities as one of its activities, initially for Cancer Research UK.
In 2006, a short list of potential beneficiaries was drawn up and members voted. The idea being that we could make a significant difference by focusing our efforts onto one main charity.
The chosen charity was the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Of note was the resonance of their work for recovering cancer patients, who are young (8 to 24), using sailing as the tool to provide hope, confidence and mental healing, through adventure.
Businesses close to the Legend Owners, who support the Association in many ways have made significant contributions of sailing paraphernalia which has then been raffled at various events, to raise funds for the Trust.
Since 2006, a total of £16,378 has been raised and donated to the Trust. In 2007 Frank Fletcher, CEO of the Trust, attended the AGM to present details of how the Trust will use donations. It seems that Frank's presentation touched the heart, as the fund raising has continued averaging over a £1000 a year.
That's not all. Other charities have benefitted from the ad hoc generosity of Legend Owners, perhaps most notably, the RNLI and other independent Lifeboat Associations around our coast.
