Opal Challenge Cup

Opal is trying to get as many participants as they can and to persuade those who avoid racing or are reluctant to participate for fear of the unknown to "HAVE A GO" and join the fun!

As it is unlikely we will be holding another Peter’s Festival in the foreseeable future, we have decided to organize a purely Opal Event in 2005 for our Owner’s Associations. After consultations with the 3 Commodores we have selected the weekend of Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June 2005, to hold this event.

It will now also be open to all owners of Bavaria Legend and IP Owners regardless of whether they are members of the respective Owner’s Associations or not In broad outline it will consist of a rendezvous off Yarmouth for a mass start ( always great fun ) on the Saturday at 1400hrs ( to fit in with tides ) of a Family Crewed Race to Poole, followed by a Barbecue in Poole on the Saturday evening, breakfast in Poole on Sunday morning and a return to Owners respective home ports at leisure.

Three Sponsorship Packages are now out to our suppliers, one to cover the cost of the barbecue and drink, one for the band and one for the breakfast.

At the risk of alienating those “rock star helmsmen “ and “super hunk foredeck men “ within the Associations or elsewhere we have decided to frustrate them by having a PREDICTED LOG RACE. Briefly this means the skippers are provided with the course well before the race and they give us their predicted finishing time and the closer to the predicted time wins. The judges also have the right to alter a time which is obviously over long from a yacht. Experts from “ Sailing Today “will be on hand to provide a “par” time for the Course from various sizes of yachts to give everyone a guide of what they SHOULD achieve.
