Sun/Rain cover for a Legend 36 |
This Easter we became the proud owners of Cento, a 2004
Legend 36 now berthed at Woolverstone on the Orwell. After many weekends of
cruising round the East Coast and evenings spent at anchor in the cockpit, we
decided we needed something simple to keep the hot sun off, or indeed, keep the
rain from coming down the companionway whilst being able to keep the washboards
out.
The Bimini and total cockpit cover seemed overkill for what we required (not to
mention the cost!) so we approached Blue Baker Yachts who have a sail and cover
facility at the marina. The upshot is, between us we came up with a design of a
simple rectangle of cover with a slot cut in the aft end. This simply rests on
top of the sprayhood, and is tied to the guardrail stanchions either side to
secure it. The cover then goes over the top of the traveller arch (with the
mainsheet central to fit in the slot) and then down at an angle, where it ties
off on the bathing platform "gate" stanchions in the centre, and to the outside
edge of the aft rail seats.
This means the total width of the cockpit is covered, and up to 1 metre back
from the arch, giving protection from sun and rain when not underway. With it
going over the arch, it gives full standing height in the cockpit. Its ability
to keep rain out is great, as it adds an extension to the spray hood, and
prevents rain being blown into the companionway when stern to wind. It doesn't
even flutter when in a F6! The ability to fold it up quickly and store in a
locker, where it takes up very little room is a great help.
At the moment Blue Baker have another one of these on the shelf if anyone wants
to buy it, and of course, they have the pattern if anyone would like one made
up. Their number is 01473 780075
