About us

ORIGINS

The Legend Owners Association provides a range of benefits for owners of Legend yachts built by the Hunter Marine Corporation of America and now also by Luhrs Marine Ltd. It was founded in July 1995 with the encouragement of Opal Marine, the UK importer, and Hunters. Close and friendly links with both Opal, Luhrs and Hunter do not hinder the association's independence yet their interest and sponsorship are a great support. The association is led by a committee drawn from the membership and elected at the Annual General Meeting.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership is inexpensive yet provides access to a range of events during the year which are always fun but can also be valuable and informative. Shore based events such as the Fitting Out and Boat Show suppers draw members from far afield. Events afloat are staged where concentrations of members are greatest. The association's newsletter, 'Wavelines' provides our chief link with members and the opportunity for members to pass on stories, experience and advice. Reports of LOA events are included plus the occasional technical article.

WHO YOU KNOW

It is sometimes said that it is not what you know but who you know that really matters. The LOA is not just about the common values we enjoy in yachts, that have led us to select a Legend, but it spills over into relationships and family feeling. LOA members are a warm and welcoming bunch with no pretensions and no snobbery about who has what size of boat.

LEARNER OR EXPERT

While we have our share of old sea dogs with years of experience, including Olympic standard skills, many are on their first cruising boat having come to sailing through experience

on dinghies. We have members who have plunged straight into yachting by buying a brand-new Legend.

SIZE DOES NOT MATTER

Whatever your level of experience, whether you have a second-hand 19 or a brand spanking top-of-the-range HC50, you will soon feel at home as an LOA member.

We start them young. Although we have our fair share of mature sailors, we also have plenty of families with children of all ages who participate in LOA events
Opal's Brian Sunderland sells another Legend by taking a prospective owner for a trial sail.

Denis Embleton displays his frayed spinnaker halyard to former commodore Don Alexander, at the Poole Rally, while LOA stalwart Brian Bower turns his back on the whole thing!
